Essence:
Cafe Du Nord, San Francisco. Thrown onstage with a cut set time
and no sound check, San Francisco-born singer/songwriter essence
kept a smile throughout all the delays while the sound engineer
made the proper adjustments between songs. Or maybe she was grinding
her teeth. Regardless, the band – fresh off an east coast
tour and in preparation for a west coast jaunt in the coming weeks
– played on with an upbeat flair. MORE>>

A bewitching set, replete with layer upon layer
or aural sensations (part acoustic, part electronic) just waiting
to be discovered and savored. With nods to female contemporaries
like India.Arie, Alanis Morissette, Dido, and Sarah McLachlan, essence
remains very much her own artist. ...a singer, who, like Madonna,
isn't afraid to take musical chances.

“San
Francisco singer-songwriter Essence makes her national debut with
“Mariposa”,
an ear-grabber from first note to last. Her pliant, intimate vocals
are applied to edgy, impressionistic lyrics about liaisons both
dangerous and exultant.” — Philadelphia
Daily News
“Our
favorite local post-capitalization singer/songwriter.” —SF
Weekly,10/21/98 “[essence’s]
voice is completely her own. Her mystic sound is balanced by a
down-home innocence, honesty and humor.” — LORD
MARTINE, SF Examiner 7/1/99 “Mariposa is swooshy, breakfast-clubby,
trip-hoppy – something
between Tori Amos and Moby” — A.D.

sweet voice and style combined with subjects that are anything but sweet. This
album is lyrical and light as a feather, even when
handling such difficult subjects as feelings for a friend, domestic abuse,
and destructive relationships. Songs like “Drop of Sunshine” typify
this style with a cotton-candy-like chorus and grim reality in the
verses. I loved this album.

Great music, great lyrics!
Heard Sleeping with the Driver on local radio and had to have this
CD! Now I
can't take it out of my CD player and I can't get the lyrics out of my head!
Very rhythmic and strangely seductive.

Incredible!
This is an amazing cd. I bought this because my local public radio station was
playing Sleeping With the Driver. Now that I've heard the rest I'll never be
able to decide on a favorite song. I just wish I hadn't missed the Essence
concert
in Philly. Definately a must have cd for the eclectic music lover in all of
us.

Excellent Writing & Musicianship
I've really enjoyed listening to this album! It was a impulse buy for me (suggested
by CD Baby based on other stuff I was buying), and it's really paid off. essence's
lyrics are clever & witty, catching me
off-guard more than once with an emotional impact I wasn't expecting. As for
the sound...well, I've never heard anything quite like this, but I like it
a lot!
Her vocal style changes from song to song, while the instrumentation is consistently
great. I love this
CD!!
