VOICE:

Participants will have the opportunity to learn healthy vocal techniques to expand range, develop ear training, improve tone, dynamics, pitch, vibrato, and anchor breathing. The goal is to build confidence, authenticity and cultivate your own unique sound. We will draw from the schools of both 'Speech Level Singing' & classical theory while we explore a variety of musical styles including rock, pop, standards, jazz, R&B, country, folk, rap, spoken word, and even classical arias. Voice and presence have a huge impact on how we feel and how others receive us. So, when students "find their voice," they can achieve more in all avenues of life.

GUITAR & UKULELE

In this week-long camp, you will learn the anatomy of the guitar/ukulele, how to tune your instrument, how to play basic chords, as well as picking and strumming techniques. We will also focus on learning contemporary & classic songs to make the experience fun and inspiring! There will be time for jams and improvisation. What you will need:A guitar (or ukulele)A tunerA guitar pickA desire to learn

SONGWRITING

For songwriting we look at telling stories in the most authentic voice possible. We work on cultivating lyrical imagery, developing melodies, composing musical hooks, and learning a variety of song structures. Students will have the opportunity to do both solo writing and group collaborations. We will do free writing, learn to silence the inner critic, and spend time appreciating the great songs and songwriters who have come before us. Each student will emerge with a brand new original composition by the end of the week!

RECORDING

Campers will have the opportunity to professionally record an original or cover song of their choice by the end of the week! The recording will be co-produced by acclaimed multi- instrumentalist and engineer Danny Uzilevsky and singer/songwriter/producer/ Essence Goldman.

INSTRUCTOR BIO’S:

ESSENCE

Award winning singer-songwriter Essence has been immersed in art and music since childhood. Her birth name really is ‘Essence’ – she was raised by quintessential flower children. As a sixth generation native of San Francisco, her parents were two free spirited bohemian artists from the Haight-Ashbury ‘Summer of Love.’ Essence has released 6 CDs on both independent and major labels. Her sound nods to songwriting legends like Tom Petty and Lucinda Williams, Dolly Parton and Gillian Welch. In addition to writing folk/Americana, country, pop and rock songs, Essence has produced a very much-loved children's album called “A Dog Named Moo”. Essence recently received national and international spotlights for her work with Bernie and the Believers through NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series and BBC. The story and music of Essence’s band Bernie and the Believers is being developed into a major Hollywood feature film on which she will be a co-producer. She has toured nationally, opening for Jason Mraz, Shawn Colvin, Tom Petty, Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Chrissie Hynde, Steve Miller, Pat Benatar, and Linda Perry.Essence’s soon-to-be released 7th studio album covers a lot of miles. A collection of hard-won wisdom captured in songs that could never have been written without real life living. It's an honest and at times humorous account of her losses and wins, to the bone and from the heart. Steeped in the traditions of the Appalachian, Americana and roots music that Essence grew up on with timeless dobro guitars, aching pedal steels, rolling banjos, and rich vocal harmonies on beds of church organs. On a road filled with searching these songs are mile markers along the way. While in the studio making her new record, Essence formed a strong musical and personal bond with guitarist, producer, and songwriter Danny Uzilevsky. Their newly formed duo features twinning vocal harmonies reminiscent of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash and other great male/female duos, including Gillian Welsh and Dave Rawlings, making this pair a powerful emerging voice on the Americana landscape. When Essence is not in the studio recording, or on the road touring, she is a voice coach and leads powerful workshops called Finding Your Voice for artists and business professionals. Essence is also a dedicated mother to a wonderful son and daughter.

DANNY UZILEVSKY

Born with strings in hand, roots in rhythm, and a musical pedigree that encompasses generations, Danny Uzilevsky has been playing guitar (and any stringed contraption) all his life. Danny has honed his craft, playing lead guitar, bass, keyboards, and singing in popular bands throughout his career. From his first band “Danny & The Bluejays” in third grade, to touring the southern American chitlin’ circuit and with roots blues band “Preacher Boy”, to his internationally acclaimed and legendary Americana soundscape known as “Chrome Johnson”, he’s a highly regarded, natural born songwriter, musician, record producer and arranger. Danny’s storied career has seen him sharing high profile stages from Glastonbury to Bumbershoot, including live performances with legends Link Wray, Dick Dale, Taj Mahal, Chris Robinson, Bill Kirtchen, Leo Nocentelli, Roy Rogers, Count Basie Orchestra, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Imogen Heap, Crystal Gayle, and Porter Wagoner. His production and recording credits are just as bountiful. In addition to the Danny & Essence project, Danny is also currently working on his own solo album.
